What happens if you have an oops moment at the TSA checkpoint?

If it doesn't fit in any of the other forums, post it here!

And still they wave through the culture with the history of terrorism. Kinda funny isn’t it.

There was a news article about a guy who went through a TSA check point in Sanford with his CCW several years ago. The head of the airport in Sanford was a newly hired and progun.

This Sanfords airport headman said no problem accidents happen. The airport head guy had this guy's gun put into a secure storage area. Then told the man that when he returns he can retrieve his ccw. Have a nice day.

Common sense is so rare it hurts.

A buddy of mine went through a TSA check point with a 38 Airlight in his backpack. Apparently they were pissed only the bullets and pins showed up on the x-ray. It took some time, fines, and lawyer's fees but he was able to get it sorted and eventually get his gun back.

It’s not so much using a bag double duty for the range and travel, but if I’m not flying and traveling in state, I’ll typically have a firearm, knife and light in my duffel bag. I’ve been in back to back travel situations where I could see if I were distracted and rushing, I could have brought it into an airport. Somebody should have like a mobile locker service that can come to the airport terminal for these oops moments.

The manager of the Sanford airport (north of Orlando), Larry Dale, is a firearms guy. Years ago he decided to hire a private security company to oversee airport security. There have been several published incidents where a firearm was found, he detained and questioned the offender, then if it was a simple mistake sent them on their way. He even held the guy's firearm until he returned, then gave it back.

Here is one example, that riled the local TV news guys ...

Wish more airports had managers like Larry Dale.

When TSA gets involved they don't have much wiggle room. If they decide to let you get back through and dump your item in your car, they face discipline for it. My guess is that they want to prevent someone from repeatedly attempting to get a firearm through the checkpoint in the hopes that they get it through eventually. If there are no repercussions, then they can keep trying. They can't do a case-by-case basis, even though clearly accidents happen with zero malicious intent.

As far as a certain type of people getting waved through, I disagree. Everyone passes through the body scanner machine, and if an anomaly pops, the person gets special checking. The days of letting four through and checking the fifth person, even if it's a little old lady, are long over.

I was in a rush and unloaded my five-seven locked it up went to the airport filled out the card put it in my gun case locked it up. I followed an employee to the X-ray machine the gun was cleared and I left. I landed in California picked up my bags went to my friend's house he wanted to see the five-seven so bad I racked the side back and a round popped out so it was a close call for me.
Everybody's got a plan until they get hit.

Long time ago in the "olden days" I worked airport security.

A Miami Dolphin football player tried to board with a loaded Glock (pretty sure a 17) thinking his CWP "permitted" him to fly with a loaded weapon. He was escorted out of the secure area by a BSO deputy so he could "unload" and "check" his firearm, I think he was made to purchase a lockable firearms container, and then he was walked to the front of the line so he wouldn't miss his flight.

Same summer an elderly man (probably early 70s) tried to board with a .22 single shot derringer in his shave kit in his carry on. Honestly I don't think anyone else would have correctly ID'd it due to it's unique profile but I knew what it was. Pointed it out to the deputy at the check point and he was duly arrested and he definitely missed his flight. Not sure if he had a carry permit or not, pretty sure the fact that he didn't play for the Dolphins was more important.

I was one of those guys. Wife and I drove over to Miami Boat Show about six years ago. Had my work backpack and threw two spare mags in it. Come home Sunday night, put the guns away; had a 8 am flight out of Ft. Myers. Had TSA Pre-Screen so went through the quick lane. Tossed my bag on the belt, and walked through the scanner. TSA guy asks whose bag this is (mine of course), says he needs to re-scan it. OK, no problem. Scans it a second time, and now he’s got about 5 other agents looking at the screen. Hmmm. I suggest that we just dump the bag and let’s see what the problem is. He tells me “sir, I’m not putting my hands in that bag.” Shit. Right about then two Lee Co. Sheriff’s Deputies arrive at the gate. The head of TSA is also there.

“Sir we found two loaded magazines in your bag. Do you have a CWL?” “Yes sir I do” I reply. “OK, what time is your flight? 8 am, OK you’ll make your flight, but we’ll have to confiscate the magazines and the ammunition. You’ll also probably get a fine from the Federal government”. I did ($250) but the worst part was that I lost my TSA Pre-Screen for 3 years.

I dump my bag before every trip now and NEVER put anything firearms related in it for ANY reason.
