M1A bolt holdback issue

Put in new bolt catch.
bolt initially hold by applying bolt catch with no mag.
then lets go with slightest jarring>
Could this be op rod spring issue?
Also ,bought a pro mag ten round mag.
Will not strip the round to feed.
Is this typical of pro mag product?

What was wrong with original bolt catch?? I am sure the angles of the dangles on the catch are very important to proper operation. Have you got a USGI catch?

And, be VERY CAREFUL dinking with its pivot pin. Easy to break the rcvr.

I recall that promag magazines are not so good. Find some real USGI ones.

I had the same issue. Seems like the catch just makes the grab. Had Dow's put in a new one. Months later it was slipping too. I had heard there was an after market longer one. Not sure if a skilled Tig man could extend the leg out also.(obviously out of gun)Mine would lock up, but soon as I removed the mag it would slip, or if it held; when bumped

It was maybe 8 0r 9 years ago that I saw it advertised. Possibly a internet search will turn up, or a call to Fulton or SPringfield.
I just live with the issue and lower the bolt so it doesn't slip.I don't like it when I am at a range and they call "safe", and have to lock it back and remove mag. I use a chamber flag then. As said, maybe a skilled welder could add a little more leg to a part.

No, the Smith Ent. extended bolt stop is extended on the outside so that it's easier to hit and release in a rapid reload situation.

Start with USGI mags and see if the problem resolves itself.

Clean the engaging surfaces of the bolt stop and the bolt. Inspect bolt for wear at the critical point where they engage each other.

Then, call Springfield. They offer a lifetime warranty on M1As for a reason. Use it.

I have owned 6 or 7 M1As and still have a couple left and ALL of them would release the bolt if jarred hard enough. I thought all of them were like that?

When I'm on the bench cleaning mine I stick one of the empty stripper clips in the guide and ease the bolt onto it to keep the chamber open and things safe like my fingers.

Why didn't I think of that?
Now all i need to do is find a stripper .
Can a Mosin or Enfield (might have an old Springfield) stripper be used?

Not sure if the Springfield will fit, I would think it probably will due to the shell base being an '06 and the .308 has the same size base.

loved the stripper clip trick for cleaning
