New SW 629 Classic

Got a new Smith and Wesson 629 Classic w 6.5 inch barrel. Gun used by Dirty Harry in the movies. I have some really good hollowpoints to go w it and some Grizzly rounds as well which will pretty much go through anything.

Smiths are some nice looking and shooting revolvers. Probably flame me, but I wouldn't shoot very many hot loads through one. Save the hot loads for a Ruger.

Not at all I’ve read similar opinions as well. I wonder why SW can’t make them to handle it?

I mostly use 44 special in mine. Reserve the mag loads for special occasions.

Sadly I have tennis elbow and I haven’t been able to shoot it yet. Hurts like a bitch to pick it up w the elbow

Don't get me wrong, you can certainly shoot lots of 44 mag in it. The problem is with the really hot loads. One of the brands even says to only shoot in Ruger. I think the cylinder in the Ruger is a smige longer than the Smiths and the Super Red Hawk is also heavier and a real tank. Whereas the Smith is a well timed work of art.

Years ago S&W had full page ad showing an old fashioned home made milkshake with the caption "Thick only counts in milkshakes, & hamburgers". People at the time thought because the Ruger was thicker, that it was able to handle hotter loads. S&W continued to say
in the ad that their guns were milled, or forged, while a Ruger was cast, so had to be thicker to make up for the difference. Now I don't know if it is true, or not, but that's what the ad stated. By the way, a good friend in the day cracked the frame in his 44 Redhawk. And when I work at the shows for SS, I am in the Ruger section, & those 44 Mag Alaskans do look awesome, but I always think about that milkshake ad. GARY.

Back in my formative days, magnum handguns ruled.
So naturally, that's what all my pals and I shot.
Although most of mine were cowboy sixguns, (too many tv westerns), one was a dirty harry.
Naturally we all souped them up to the hilt for our 100 yard get-together matches.
Never had a single failure of any kind with that Smith.
Including a few impressive reloading errors.
YeeHaw.
Formative years, remember.
Neither did anyone else as I recall.
So, don't sweat the rumors.

Rugers, on the other hand, regularly spit out their cylinder center pins.
As memory serves, Rugers did have cast frames.
That was what Ruger was famous for, making cast stuff.
Not only for themselves but for lots of other companies, too.

A longer cylinder wouldn't do anything for strength,

A Ruger cylinder has thicker walls and the bolt cut is between chambers rather than over them (on a a Smith this is the thinnest area).

However over the years Smith has addressed durability in these revolvers where it NEEDED it.
They strengthened the crane for one and also the hand I believe.

You can shoot as many "standard" magnums as you wish (or your wrist van handle) out of this Smith!
Also since its blued it should be a M29 as 629s are SS....

I stated save the HOT loads for Ruger. Go to the Buffalo Bore website and read their warning on the heavy and hot 44mag loads. It states that they are NOT to be used with SW. I'm sure they wouldn't want to lose sales for no reason. Furthermore, when I said the Ruger cylinder was a smige longer it was a reference for shooting heavy bullets because they are longer.

They are VZ yes. And holy s';t do they hurt like a m;;;;r f;;;;r when you shoot this gun. Do not recommend
