So a couple friends and I are going boating soon and would like to do some skeet shooting from the boat. Is there anyone that could help me clarify the legality of this?
I called the local police department today was told that yes, it's legal. Just wanted to verify what he told me. How far out do you have to be...etc?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

If you are out in salt water, you'll be OK as long as you are away from land (assuming you aren't in a place like Pinellas cty that thinks they have special jurisdiction over all the water in the county). If you are on a lake or river, that's another matter. For one thing, shooting on a lake this time of year is liable to attract the attention of the game warden whom you'll have to convince you aren't duck hunting.

I once saw a boat duck hunting on Sarasota bay.... It was rather curious...

I'm sorry I should have clarified. This will be on the Gulf of Mexico.

The problem with Pinellas cty isn't on the gulf side - it is on the bay side. Some of the inland waters used to be good duck hunting spots until the cty decided it didn't want any shooting there.

I remember reading something about going out to international waters with NFA stuff and it being an issue to bring it back in ??
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

So is it 3 or 12 miles?
If I'm understanding it correctly then >3 miles is federal and >12 milles is international?

Issue with whom? You don't go through customs coming back, do you?

I’m goimg to bump this really old thread and post. You’re probably thinking of Bruce Louis Bartos. My recollection from reading online was the collective belief he modified his semiauto ar-15 to shoot full auto out in international waters and got dinged on the way back.

Local county/city anti-hunting ordinances have been invalidated. This past winter there have been duck hunters on Upper Tampa Bay every weekend from the St. Pete/Clearwater Airport to to the Lake Tarpon outfall. I heard them every weekend morning, saw the decoys and sink box boats just off the Bayside Bridge, and talked to guys at the Safety Harbor ramp in boats with flip-up camo matting on the sides. They said the duck shooting was pretty good this year.
and some rin up hill and down dale, knapping the chucky stanes to pieces wi' hammers, like sae mony road-makers run daft - they say it is to see how the warld was made!
