There are DIYs and then there are DIYs. Most of us can probably change the oil and swap the brake pads on our car, but how far will we go until we give up and take it to the dealer? This R63 owner, in the face of a $57,000 repair estimate for his smokey engine, decided to risk it all, and rebuild the engine himself.

Well all know how rare the R63 is. Less than 200 examples were ever built, making the V8-powered minivan a hard car to find. User "Mazdadeuce" over on the Grassroots Motorsports forums decided to pick up a white example with 94,000 miles on the clock from a Mercedes dealer without any kind of warranty. Sadly, 12,000 miles into ownership, one of the head bolts near the back of the engine failed, causing everything to go to hell.

So, Mazdadeuce took his ailing Merc to the local dealership to assess the damage. In the end, they came back with a staggering $57,515 repair estimate to rebuild the engine. Absurd? Yes. But that's the price of late-model German luxury.

So instead of laying out the price of a new 718 Boxster to fix his R63, Mazdadeuce figured he could do it himself. He's outlined-via a forum thread over 30 pages long-his journey through the process. It's involved cutting, building tools, and even installing a lift, but he's made an impressive amount of progress so far. You can follow the thread here, and if you're into complex DIYs, you won't be disappointed.

Owning cars with weird, low production engines is usually asking for trouble.
But a broken head bolt shouldn't require all that.
Did the link to the story actually go anywhere?
Maybe here instead:?

The R series was not well received in the UK but a 63 version of anything would have me giving it a chance [smilie=011.gif]

A $57k bill for an engine rebuild sounds bollocks to me, I bet you could employ an AMG engineer to do the job as a working holiday for a hell of a lot less [smilie=011.gif]

A mini van with over 500 HP from the factory? Interesting story:
