Bomb proofing a 1998 6.5L diesel engine

Post by cubanstang50 » Mon Dec 05, 2016 10:27 am

Any diesel mechanics in here? Thats my truck now. It has 250k and runs without a problem right now. I have had mixed reviews from people. Some say get rid of it cause is a crappy engine. Then i found a video on youtube about bomb proofing this truck as there are small things that should be replaced as they are either in the wrong spot or just to weak of a part to run effectively. I am not a mechanic but i do my own maintenance on my cars.

Some of the parts are to move the pmc. Which have already been done. Second is to get rid of the vacuum pump and get a 93' serpentine belt. Also change out the lifter pump.

This is the most helpful video i have found so far.

LOL, that's funny!! Yeah, the 6bt's are pretty bullet proof, 'cept for the dowel pin, and thats pretty easy to fix.

I've got two now that are the gensets in the boat I run. They have 14,000 hrs EACH, operating continuous duty, 1800 rpm. We did a top end at 12,000 hrs just as preventative maint before a big trip.
If they were in a truck, 14,000 hrs x 60 mph = 840,000 miles, still running strong.

Great video, and the changes he suggests are not difficult or expensive.
After that, the thing I do w/ our Diesels is make sure there is clean fuel.
I added a DAHL fuel filter/water separator to our 7.3 Powerstroke.

The pmc is already relocated to the top of the firewall and later on i will be moving it to behind the bumper. I am kind of lost with the vacuum pump. It doesnt look difficult to take out but once i do there is a hose open, what do i do with it? Plug it with a screw?

Also where do you put the fuel separator at?

I found two options for controlling the waste gate manually, one ACE hardware, one custom made.

I mounted the filter where there was vertical clearance, and also made a shield to help keep road debris from damaging the plastic filter.
