Red Dot on .22 Rifle @ 100 yds?

Post by 870Mike » Mon Dec 05, 2016 5:17 pm

Need to shoot safely on an NRA approved range in low-light. Not sure a scope will work well due to my poor (night) vision. Are red-dots suitable for .22 @ 100 yds?

Depends on the size of the target.
Red dots at night usually don't work well at night as the image will be darker than what you can see visually and this includes high quality RDS like Aimpoint. Your best bet will be to use a "regular" scope and use it at lower magnification to collect as much light as your eye can use to make the image brighter.

Regular 3 x 9 and a laser.
Lasers are pretty ghey but If you light up a critter at 100 yds the green dot ( preferably ) of the laser will help illuminate and or distract him ...think cat and laser.....you can also get a coon to chase one as well...not sure about opossums or foxes but cat critters will... [smilie=033.gif]
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

I effectively use a cree greenlight at over 250 yds. you can shine it right on a fox and it will just stare at you..looking right into the light. im not saying I can make that shot..but it is a clear enough target to take one

during the day gage can use a reddot on the sw22 and keep it on 6'' steel at 100 all day
im the other gary...

Can't use a laser. Must be discrete.

Not sure a scope is going to let me see the target in the semi-dark. There are some dim streetlights, and lots of shadows. I'll be shooting at shadows.

You can easily use a scope for a shot like that.
A good quality 3-9X40mm scope set at 5x or 6x power will have enough light to see a dark color animal like a coon from 100 yards if you have a light color background and some light. I'm not sure a 22lr would put an animal that size down quickly from 100 yards.

My eyes are the issue, but I have one of those laying around. Will give it a test-run.

100 yds on a "cat sized " [smilie=033.gif] target is a tough shot most "cat sized" targets need a head or heart shot with a smaller cal bullet....that whole 9 lives thing and all [smilie=011.gif]

Nah... poison isn't suitable on an NRA approved range.

I don't think snares are allowed at an NRA approved range.

You can, but you have to see them first. Suppressor a little earlier so you got more light.

Solid concrete back-stop. No civilians present after 7pm. It's all good.
