Scope ring advice for S & W 15-22

I have 2 Smith 15-22s that I plan to put scopes on.

From experience, what advice can you give me in regard to an ideal scope mounting height and see-through/solid base.

While it's not quite as critical for a .22 rifle as some others, the higher the scope is mounted, the more you might have to lift your head off of the stock to see through it.
Unless the stock is made high enough to match.
Hardly conducive to accurate shooting.
So, the iron sights might have to be changed in order to keep the scope low enough to avoid this.
Maybe a dot scope attached to a rail would be better.
Just a thought.

In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.
