327 Federal Magnum... *Taurus update*

Post by kmagnuss » Tue Jan 03, 2012 9:00 pm

Well what the hell I bought one on a whim. $258 for a stainless 6 shot snubbie (Taurus... God I can't believe I bought a Taurus... I effing despise Taurus)... I couldn't pass up the price I guess for what seems like a lot of firepower from a small package.

So have any of you shot one? They seem to get pretty great reviews from people who have actually shot and tested their abilities...

Well I'll report back on how it shoots after I get it. Maybe a little comparison next to my S&W snubbie... maybe drgrenthum will drag out the chrono and we can see some real world numbers from both.

See ya.

Make sure you put it through it's paces before you trust it. My buddy had to send his back. Unfired rounds in the cylinder would fall back preventing the cylinder from turning.

I will. Thanks for the heads up.

I probably should have just bought a 357 lcr... but I guess I like the underdogs. It'll probably be impossible to find ammo for it in a few years. Eh.

It also shoots the other more common variants of .32 for revolvers. Let us know how she shoots. Congrats.

I have had one for over a year [ 2" blue ] and have shot .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Magnum through it. You just have to keep an eye out for ammo & it seems that i find a box or 2 of one of the above at every gunshow at a good price...[ i got 5 boxes of Fiocci FMJ .32 Long for $40 at one show.... score! ] ....... i have shot mostly .32 S&W Long through it [ about 150+ rds ] with about 50ea of the other 3 with no problems. It is a great teaching tool with the .32 Long for new/ or Female shooters, I recently took a friend and his wife shooting and she wants my Taurus, so i am going to order one in stainless/hammerless [ $259 at Buds ] and let her have the blue one. My only complaint is that the blued one has started rusting under the Hogue grip on the body side after a year of CCW...... but my old 2" Colt Det. Spec. did the same thing.....jim

Got it today. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but first impressions of the pistol itself are what I expected... Taurus crap. First off the thing is heavy. WAY heavier than my S&W 642 (J frame snubbie, stainless). There's a reason that you can't find any advertised weights for this thing... it's a friggin lead brick. I'll weigh it at work tomorrow, but I'm going to guess every bit of 24 oz unloaded... compared to a 642's weight of 14.5 oz. Well besides the weight, it was delivered 'gooey'. Almost like it had cosmoline on it instead of oil. So I took it apart and cleaned it up... even doing the cylinder holes (whatever they're called) because the rounds wouldn't slide in without a little help. Well cleaning it up of course made it better... but I noticed a few parts that were seriously ground down with a bench grinder... or a piece of rock... I can't tell. It's seriously the nastiest grinding I've ever seen.

Anyway... I'm an avid Taurus hater and this solidifies that I'll never buy another Taurus again... even for $259 for a new gun.

Hey Taurus... eff you man. Eff you.

ETA... it's really not that bad. I don't mind sweating all over it in my pocket and possibly throwing it in the truck from time to time. Gotta go see how it shoots now.

For anyone who cares, it's almost identical in size to a 642, but the cylinder is slightly wider.

Forgot to mention...

I like the grip better than my 642.

Oh... and the "hammerless" design isn't an internal hammer like on a 642... it's just a friggin bobbed hammer. ](*,) For me, the whole point of no hammer is so that pocket lint and crap doesn't get into it.

There's a pretty good chance it will be going up on the BST in a couple weeks. I'm going to shoot it first though

fwiw Ruger makes an Sp101 in 327 Federal Mag. Also gonna be heavy but the quality will be much nicer (more money). Let us know how she shoots.

I just read last night that the velocites in the Ruger 3" barrel get around 1400 fps for this... but the same load in the 2" barrel of the Taurus are down around 950. That's a pretty damn big difference for 1".

Here is a link to a review on the Ruger> http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-SP101-327.htm I fondled the gun and was pleased with the quality. At the time I was looking for a 357mag (bought SP101 3") but the 327 is still on my list. Pretty good performance with less recoil makes the 327mag an attractive addition to the collection.

I hope it shoots well for you. I've owned a dozen or so Taurus products and never had a bad one. That includes revolvers and semi-autos... .380's up to .40's and .38's.

It is interesting to see that there is only a 2.3 ounce difference between an unloaded and loaded piece. I would have guessed that 6 rounds of .327 ammo would have weighed more. It would be interesting to see the difference in some other firearms.

I'll make a new thread for something that has exactly what you're looking for.

Forgot to mention that I shot it today...

It actually was pretty pleasant to shoot. Compared to +P loads in my .38 jframe it's WAY easier to shoot. This is due to a couple reasons... 1 is that the metal frame of the jframe hits a bone in my thumb that I've broken, so after a couple rounds it feels like somebody hit it with a hammer. #2 is definitely the weight of the Taurus vs. the S&W.

I'd say it's like shooting a full size 1911 .45 compared to a lighter gun in .40. More of a heavy, slower push... vs the snappy feel of the J-frame.

So aesthetically I give it a B-, workmanship I give it a C-, and shootability I'd say a B (trigger is a little heavy for my taste).

I guess for $259 it's not all that bad.
