Shooting the 500 S&W Magnum

Post by Azrael2004 » Sun May 22, 2011 8:32 pm

Got to shoot my buddy's 500 S&W Magnum today. All I can say is Holy Christ on a cracker that thing kicks.
Shot 275gr, 350gr, and 500gr rounds through it. If you get a chance to try it, I recommend it. [smilie=pdt_xtremez_30.gif]
Shot a gallon water jug and hit low, it was sitting on an upside down 5 gallon bucket. The downward force on the water blew the bottom out of the damn bucket! Below are 2 links to my buddies shooting it one handed, and a pic comparing it to my Charter Arms .38 snub nose.
I had to edit the F-bomb out of the end of the 1st one. [smilie=011.gif]

Thats why there is an extraordinary amount of used 500s out there "only fired a few times"!

The biggest reason that the .500 and .460 S&W's don't get a ton of range time is the cost of feeding the beasts. Ammo for these guns runs about $2 per round. Shooting more than a box at a sitting hurts the wallet and the hand.

as much as I'd love to own one of the big bore revolvers, I could never justify it unless I either (a) lived in the middle of bear country in Alaska or (b) had way too much money on my hands. Though the .460 is tempting due to ammo versatility with .45LC, .454 Casull, and .460.

I would love to shoot that puppy, but I just don't have the urge to buy one! I have maxed myself out at 44 magnum for my personal inventory.

I met a guy at the range that had one. I new something loud was about to be fired due to his wife cowering at the back wall holding her ear protection tighter to her head.

He let me fire it. It did produce a strong kick.

My .460 is the loudest gun I have ever shot. The last time I had it at the range it shook dust loose from the tin roof of the range. Not sure I would want to shoot it at an indoor range.
