Anyone else a fan of the 44 special? I have a growing respect for this round.

Re: 44 Special Fans
S&W 696 is my only 44SPL but it is my favorite. 44SPL got me to learn to handload so that doubles my fun.

I had a Charter Arms Bulldog in 44 special and it was one nice shooting gun.

From the time I "graduated" from rimfire to centerfire, the 44M and 44spl have been favorites.
Judging from the new stuff for the .44, it will be around for awhile.

Re: 44 Special Fans
As I got older and tired of the more heavy recoiling 44 Mag, I started reloading to more 44 SPL velocities.
Have many Special cases, but more Mag cases. I have a few boxes of Mag loaded, but use the 'Special' loads in my Super Blackhawk, or Uberti 1873 clone if I want fun.

I have a much sought after not not often seenTaurus 441 and a Browning B92. True the Browning is .44 Magnum but for sake of ammo commonality I usually just shoot special ammo from it to be able to shoot the same ammo from my revolver.

+1 on the Charter Arms Bulldog Pug. Great little gun. Carries about as much ass as my 1911 in a smaller package.

Never have fired a Bulldog. What is the recoil like?

I put a set of Pachmayr grips on mine and they help. It's not a gun that you put a lot of rounds through.Joshua L Chamberlin wrote:Never have fired a Bulldog. What is the recoil like?
I did shoot some rather stout 240 grain reloads one time. My project at the time was just down the road from the Lake Arrowhead Rifle Range. Went to shoot during lunch one day. After 50 rounds it took me about an hour to recover the feeling in my hand enough to be able to write in my log book.

The guy I bought the gun from had it for two years and never fired it. He was afraid of the recoil. Using factory loads it's not bad.

Charter Arms Bulldog, rosewood grips, bobbed hammer, shaved front sight in custom leather pancake. Started carrying this after reading stories about five-shot .38's not stopping perps...

I might need to look into a bulldog. They're certainly cheap enough.

I don't remember the Bulldog having that much recoil to be honest. Seemed very mild for the caliber. Of course it was about 20 years ago that I owned it.

Re: 44 Special Fans
It is somewhat tame. I'd compare the recoil to my Airweight .38. But I ain't shooting 240g reloads, either.patw wrote:I don't remember the Bulldog having that much recoil to be honest. Seemed very mild for the caliber. Of course it was about 20 years ago that I owned it.

Re: 44 Special Fans
I have ended up with three Taurus .44 Special in roughly the last year. I'd love to get a S&W .44 Special but they are spendy.

Re: 44 Special Fans
No doubt correct. I was in Okeechobee when i found a Taurus 441 with 4 inch barrel for $225. I bought that one and love it . I started to keep my eyes open and found a seller in Broward with a 431 and 441, both with 3 inch barrels and custom grips. I bought both for $500. I have no idea what these sell for outside the ones I've found but I've paid $250 tops for mine. They are ok shooters but nothing like the S&W in fit and finish.

Re: 44 Special Fans
I think it's a great cartridge with a lot of versatility...but only if you reload. Factory loads are too mild and/or too expensive.
I had a Charter Arms Bulldog revolver in the early 80's. One of those "Son of Sam" gun with short barrel. I shot it frequently with my handload of 240gr SWC @ 900fps which had a hefty kick. My gun didn't hold up very well over time with that load.
