Smith model 17 history

Post by kayakingsteve » Sat Sep 13, 2014 4:35 pm

Is anyone here a resident Smith .22lr enthusiast that can give me a bit of history on the the model 17 dash variations over the years? Does anyone know if they went to a computer modeled drop in extractor on any of the 17's prior to the 617 models?

The K22 Master Piece became the Model 17 in 1957 running thru to the 17-1 in 1959 with the change to left hand threads on the extractor. 17-2 1961 deleted the 4th screw on the trigger guard. 17-3 in 1967 relocated the rear sight screw. 1968 was the end of the diamond grip panels. 17-4 1977 moved the gas ring. 1982 was the last year for pinned barrels, and 1986 the model 18 gave way to the four inch heavy barrel with a serrated ramp front sight. 17-5 changed the yoke retention. 17-6 1990 full luged barrel some of the earliest were without the full lug. 1993 end of the eight and tree eighth inch barrel. 17-7 1994 changed the rear rear sight leaf, and the extractor. 1996 introduced the ten shot alloy cylinder.

Thanks for the great info! It looks like there is no way to get a new style extractor in an 8-3/8" barrel! Ever heard of any replacing an extractor on an earlier model 17?
