35 Rem AR, what do you guys think

Post by Lilwoody » Sun Jul 26, 2015 12:39 am

I'm seriously considering building a ar in 35 Remington. I load plinking rounds for my mod 81 and Marlin 336 with 357 pistol bullet and have several very nice loads worked up. While reading about the new 25-45 sharps in the AR platform I decided to stuff one of my 35 rems, then another and another in a AR mag and darned if they don't fit but appears they will feed too. Comparing the velocities and energy to the sharps I feel the 35 rem with a 140 gr FTX load I've worked up will out preform it everywhere under 250 yards. Just a thought but it would be interesting to have a carbine HBAR slinging 140 gr ballistic tips at 2600 fps or 158 XTP at 2500 fps. There wouldn't be a whistle pig safe inside 250 yards. With 158 gr gas check hard casts it would make a great hog/deer round.
It would be no real easy feat. A barrel and custom bolt face would be the major expense and the gas system would take a lot of tweaking but the reward I feel would be worth it.

.35 Rem min OAL = 2.460 in.
5.56x45 max OAL = 2.260 in.

Am I missing something? Does sound intriguing though.

I'm curious how much a custom barrel like that would cost :-k

but good luck with it
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

Rent, this would be a reloader only thing using pistol bullets so the col with a rifle bullet is N/A. With a lighter, shorter, pistol bullet, seated to the cant, it is much shorter. My loads are measuring a tad shorter than a 223. They shoot very well too with no signs of excess pressure using H4198 or Varget.

Doing ft/lbs calculations looks like very intriguing. Even loaded to light specs (2400 fps) the 35 with a pistol bullet will do close to 2000 and loaded hot (2600) 2200n ft/lbs, That is 700 to 1000 ft/lb of energy more than a 223 and 500 to 700 more than the new 25-45. This looks more worth while.

Looks like a bolt for 7.62x39 would need to be opened by 13 thou to work.
