ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - An attempted robber was killed Tuesday during an exchange of gunfire outside a Wells Fargo ATM in the Conway neighborhood, officials with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said a man in his 60s was at the ATM on Hoffner Avenue Conway Crossings Plaza at about 2:30 a.m., when a man in his 20s tried to rob him, deputies said.

The robbery victim, who has a valid Concealed Weapons permit, was armed with a gun and gunfire was exchanged, deputies said.

The man in his 60s then got into his car and drove a short distance away and called 911, officials said. He then returned to the scene to meet with investigators.

The man in his 20s told deputies he had been robbed, but that information proved to be false, authorities said. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he later died, deputies said.

How bad could someone need money to make them go to an ATM at 2:30 AM?

Congratulations to WFTV for not referring to deceased robber as "The victim".

I wouldn't know, since I don't even have an ATM card :-)

The time a person goes any place should not be the point. You have a right to go anyplace any anytime you want. People have been robbed in board daylight as well. It's just a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time..

I use to work 2nd shift and have gone to atms at all hours. You must be diligent of your surroundings no matter what time of the day it is.

Yep, I can see going to the ATM at that time especially if, for example, you are leaving to travel on holiday at that time of morning and need cash for the trip.

Any word on whether or not the 60y/o will face any charges?

I'm doing it right now. Evening/overnight shifts lasting as long as 13 hours.... Ugggghhh.... Thankfully, my employer has direct deposit, so i don't have to worry about that.

The only place I feel the need to be vigilant here at night here is the Walmart, because the property it is it's own little crime-ridden ghetto.

I am always extra aware of my surroundings when using the ATM, no matter what time of day.

I always take the wife when visiting an ATM late at night.
She gets out of the car and performs the transaction.
I keep the motor running, so I can speed away if anyone attacks the wife….. [smilie=011.gif]
