Nuisance (tie you down as far as travel, interfere with and interrupt most anything); mess; frightful expense (vet bills, license and ''wellness'' shakedown racket).

Probably not for everyone, but my family has been a "doberman" family for time immemorial. No trouble at all with kids... they're being bred for more family life than "guard" life, these days.

Either that, or a Golden or Lab.

you should try house sitting one for an extended time, like a foster dog parent, see if you can commit all in before buying a puppy and training , vet bills etc....we were dog people for 24 years, haven't had one in 2 years and although I miss it sometimes, I don't miss going for a walk in the rain, cleaning up the poop, being tied down for travel, can't stay out always have to get home and let the dog out, etc....freedom is wonderful, and while it doesn't replace time with mans best friend, its a fair compromise.
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

A beagle was the only dog I gave up on. [smilie=012.gif] I could not house break him. His name was Bagel the Beagle and he howled. I don't know that I'd call it a howl, but beagle howls are unique.
Where are we going and why am I in this hand basket?

You DO know that your Pit reads your computer screen when you go to the fridge... and now he knows the truth about you.

Dog breeds with short snout (flat face like pug, English bulldog) tends to have a lot of medical issues that are sometimes very expensive.
Other breeds like GSD has a lot of hip and spine problems. Boxers then to die early from cancers.
Mutts tends to be healthy and live long life.

short shouted dogs cant handle the heat very well. all dogs can have issues. my last 2 pit mixes died of cancer before the ages of 5 and 7. right now i have a pure bread pit that is going on 5, she is strong and healthy, very loving, knocking on wood with this one. all my dogs have been rescues i cant see spending big money on a dog from a puppy mill with there are so many in shelters needing homes

I haven't googled any but just an idea. Look & see if your local area has <insert breed here> rescue's.
Wife & I got a dalmatian mix several years ago from our local dalmatian rescue. He wasn't a pup when we got'em (2yrs old) but I'm sure many of these places get pups.
I would second this. A lot of rescues get unwanted litters.

Also, and I'm sure that you already know this, stay away from pet stores. Reputable breeders do not sell to pet stores.

We tried this after our border collie died at 13. After three overdue vacations in just under a year, we started fostering for rescues. Not too long after, we were dog people again.

The plus side is that by the time you do get to vacation, you have enough points racked up for a bunch of free ones.

OP, I will loan you my dogs for a week to try them out and see if they work for you. I think I have enough points for another vacation by now.

Yeah, I've had 2 Beagles that exhibited all of the above. [smilie=011.gif]
I used to keep my range muffs handy for when "Happy" heard a noise or saw his shadow and would CRANK UP the howl.
Our current 18 lb. half Beagle / half Terrier is nowhere near as loud or difficult to train as the full blooded Beagles were.
