Help me get a puppy!!! Please :)

Post by armedpolak » Fri Apr 27, 2018 12:42 pm

I'm looking for a family dog for me, wife, and my 8 and 10 yo kids. Wife is a stay home mom so dog would never be alone much. We have a 2500sq/ft house with a large fenced in backyard, and a pool. Perfect home for a dog.

I'm looking for a female puppy, kid friendly breed, that will be no more than 35-40 pounds when fully grown. Smaller lab mix, or whatever. Gotta be cute and would prefer not crazy active and energetic; just normal darn dog.

No I do not want to adopt an older dog; I want to raise my own from very young (no older than few months). Yes I checked EVERY shelter in Broward, few in West Palm, and not one has what I'm looking for and I'm not being picky. Yes lots of them list dogs that match my criteria but call them or visit and you'll find out their website is months out of date (just came back from two shelters today with this very problem ](*,) ). I've already been looking actively, daily, for few weeks. No I have not contacted any breeders yet.

PM me or email me at mvorbrodt@gmail.com or text at 954-504-1777 if you have one for sale or know of a private party that has one for sale.

P.S. NO PITBULLS [-X

EDIT TO ADD: One more thing before anyone asks: no we would never hit a dog nor make it stay outside as punishment. We raise our kids without spanking nor yelling and would treat the dog the same... with love and care. Also, both wife and I had dogs in the past so we're not noobs. My kids play with dogs and know how to be gentle with one. No cruel s';t or mistreatment here by spoiled brats. Dog would truly have a dream home. $$$ for vets etc is a non issue; i make decent living.

You are in the right track already. The other option i would say would be a lab.

Labs are great dogs, have known a few owned by friends.
But I just did a quick google search and female Labs are 55 to 70 lbs.
Your original post states "no more than 35-40 lbs."

I haven't googled any but just an idea. Look & see if your local area has <insert breed here> rescue's.
Wife & I got a dalmatian mix several years ago from our local dalmatian rescue. He wasn't a pup when we got'em (2yrs old) but I'm sure many of these places get pups. I don't recall the amount but it was well under $100 for the adoption.

As a side note. Looking at dogs on craigslist (and visiting) can be a real emotional ordeal. We looked at 1 dog, a lab mix I believe, maybe 6-8 months old....dickhead redneck kept her & 3 others outside. Dog was sweet and gentle but very submissive, almost afraid. Was filthy f#;.,/g dirty. As much as it pained me I had to leave her.

Good luck on finding your forever pup. I have no doubt s/he will get a great home.

Beagle may be o good choice. Well within your size range, cute as puppies and when grown. Mine is very good with kids.

Black Lab works for me. A little larger than you want, but they are great dogs. Whose dog will this one belong to? Someone has to train it. If it's your wife get a male. If it's you get a female. When you buy a puppy they don't become dog's until about 2 years old. Good luck.

Go to a shelter, rescue a dog or two from the gas chamber.

I adopted a pointer lab mix puppy at the shelter by bass pro in Dania 9 years ago. She never chewed up furniture but she always had chew toys and took to crate training immediately. As far as energy, you are best to walk your dog every day to release some of that energy and create a bond between you and the dog

Watch out for dog rescue operations. There is a nationwide scam going on with puppy mills selling dogs to some of these organizations who then charge the buyers for a ridiculous amount in transportation and veterinary fees. I'd very much prefer to buy from a local breeder.

And watch out for very popular breeds, or those popular in the past. There's too much inbreeding and in the past its wrecked some very nice dogs like cocker spaniels and collies with all sorts of illnesses and behavioral problems. Also hip dysplasia is common in a lot of larger breeds. The neighbor's weimaraner had a bad case and it really broke them up, being faced with either a massive bill for surgery or putting her down.

The best dog I ever had was a shepherd - Collie mix.
Perfect in every way except for springtime shedding.
Then it was a mess and so was the house.
Anyway you look at it, dogs require a lot of care and effort.
And he was a rescue.
Why buy a new one when there are so many used ones that need a good home?
Pitbull females aren't a problem.
There's a lady in our neighborhood who fosters them, mostly because no one else wants them.
All are sweet.
The only nasty dog she ever had was a large hound.
The female pits were all gentle and easy to get along with.

Pits are great with people too and even kids as long as the kids know not to do anything stupid like kick the dog or other nonsense they shouldn’t be doing with any breed.

They can be aggressive with other dogs and animals if they get a bad vibe from that dog or animal. And sometimes people will freak out because of their breed and the image they have in the media, which in turn can freak the dog out because they don’t understand why those people are scared when they just wanted to say hi. As long as whoever they meet, animal or human, is calm though they tend to be calm as well.

Anyway no matter what breed you get please don’t get one from a breeder when there are so many in shelters and rescues that need homes. You should be able to find one that suits you as long as you keep earnestly looking.
