Low mileage?!

Post by 870Mike » Thu Feb 08, 2018 1:01 am

Looking for a used P/U and can't believe what some folks think is "low mileage".

Attn, dreamers: 150k miles on a "normal" car/truck is not "low". (Normal = Not an 18 wheeler or serious diesel).

And WTF is up with "all highway miles"?!

150k on a Ford F150 is 3/4 (+/-) of it's life, if maintained meticulously/properly.

150k on a Toyota P/U is 1/2 of it's life, if maintained meticulously/properly.

40k on a 10 yr. old truck is "low mileage".

150k is not "low mileage". It is "significant mileage". So, when you post an ad stating "low mileage" without listing the mileage in the ad, then telling me it has 150k miles after wasting my time to e-mail you about said low mileage =

How about a 9 year old vehicle garage kept in great condition with about 60k

That would be low in my book.

Really Mike? FU?
150K on a 20 year old truck would be low mileage, right?
12 to 15K is considered standard, how old is the wreck you called about?
Besides, don't you know people lie when selling used cars?

I have a 1998 with 150K on it. I'd consider that low mileage for a DD I guess. AVG 7,500 per year?

My father in law had a 10 year old Expedition with 59k when he quit driving. Said to me ''Wanna buy a truck?'' I did, and still have it, probably keep it until it's my time to quit.

Milage that is too low raises red flags, too. If I see a 15 year old truck that averages 5k a year, I suspect tampering. Or a truck that was in an accident and sat until someone salvaged it to resell.

"Generally'' true. However I average about that because I'm retired, and don't have to go very far for my needs except for an occasional trip to Lakeland and back. While you are correct that it is a flag in most cases, occasionally the reason is sound and one can come across a ''deal''.

Or if you have multiple cars the mileage stays pretty low on them. My cars average about 2-4k per year... but I have several.

And yes... anything under 10k a year is pretty low in my opinion... but there's a threshold there where even if the car is 40 years old... if it has 200k miles I don't really consider it low anymore.

The local Cadillac dealer used a different term when I was thinking about a new car. He called my one owner 10 year old Cadillac DTS with 76,000 miles a car with average mileage, not low miles. Most of his used caddies, 2012 to 2015 trade ins, not off lease, all had from 60k to 90k miles and were called low mileage used cars. I'm told 15k miles per year would be called average mileage for today's drivers. I just did a brake job on my daughters one owner 2010 Expedition, 1st rear end and 2nd front end brake job at 100k miles.

Low mileage?!

Post by dammitgriff » Thu Feb 08, 2018 12:47 pm

Hmmm...guess my all-stock 1996 Chevy Z-71 should be sent out to pasture, then...
282,000+ miles on the original V-8 Vortec engine, never even had the valve covers off it.
However:
— 4 starters and 4 batteries
— 2nd alternator, radiator, water pump, timing chain, AC compressor, ABS module, and transmission
— 2nd spider injector, just replaced at 278,000 miles (!)
— plus the usual, normal wear and tear stuff, like brake pads, rotors, front differential shift servo, front & rear main seals, girlfriends, etc.
Sure as Hell beats $50K for a new truck and I can still haul ass up and down the turnpike at 80 mph (exactly 3000 RPMs, by the way), tow a 5,000-pound trailer, or just crawl around the woods with it.
My plan is to retire the truck as my daily driver once it hits 300,000 miles and use it strictly for the woods. I bought this truck in 1998...owned it for 19 years and counting. And yep, it sure looks its age. Come to think of it, I ain’t too purty no more either!

Wasn't directed at you...referring to lying sellers who are trying to be clever. Context is everything.

150k is 150k. 6 times around the planet = high mileage, not "low mileage".

Yes, that would be low mileage for the age of the vehicle, but it's not a "low mileage" car.

My '02 Saab only has 96k. That's low mile for the age of the car, but high mileage for a Saab.

Agree with ya.
Having a low miles per year average doesn't always mean a low mileage car.
150,000 miles is still that with the wear and tear that accumulates on the vehicle for those miles.

Now if it's an older vehicle, even though it's low average miles per year, you also have older and weather aged parts and materials to add to the miles....especially if the vehicle didn't see a garage on a regular basis.
