How to store cigars without humidor

Post by rug357 » Mon Jan 22, 2018 7:48 pm

What is the best way to store cigars without a humidor in S. FL.? I was give some very nice cigars by a friend who just returned from Central America but my humidor is too small to store them all. I need to store about 100 cigars for couple weeks to few months.

I use a little cooler.

Mine is a Coleman, made for a 6 pack.

My humidifier is one of those little jar things with the beads.

I doubt I have more than $20 invested in it.

I guess you'll be going a little bigger for 100

Are they boxed or bundled or loose?

Short term for a few sticks, ziplock bag and a piece of iceberg lettuce. Longer term and larger quantity, a cooler as mentioned above and buy unscented crystal cat litter(silica gel) to use as humidification beads.

I have also found the little balls that swell up for as little as $9.00 for 1.5 pounds.

Drill the top of an old medicine bottle, and you're good to go for pennies.

I'm getting ready to build a humidifier for my new guitar.

Rug, any airtight container big enough to hold the cigars will do. It would be best if they had some space between them ... rather than a tight stack.
Ideal conditions for the stogies is 70 degrees / 70% humidity.
It turns out that propylene glycol and water in a 50/50 solution will maintain 70%.
PG sucks up the humidity naturally to 70% and the presence of water is there in case the air gets drier than 70%.
PG is available at the drug store and you can make a 'humidifier' by throwing a sponge in a deli plastic container and punching holes in the top.
I suggest you use distilled water to avoid a slime developing on the sponge and lessening the effectiveness.
Or your can pick up a humidifier on Amazon for under $10.
Here is an example:

If you're going the plastic container route make sure you line the bottom with a thin piece of cedar veneer. Under $10 @ Home Depot.
However, it going to take a while to smoke 100 sticks. :ber

Can't beat this one!

I had that exact one, it was great! When you get a new one, while down all of the reader inside, every day for several days WITHOUT any cigars. You will see how much moisture the wood will soak up each day. The objective is to get the wood saturated at 70% (as mentioned) first. Otherwise you'll have the reader drawing the moisture away from you cigars. ALSO, since they are from another country, you don't want any worms coming out of the sticks and ruining All of you cigars. If they were mine, andsI have done this, put you cigars into a ziplock, and place into the freezer for three days. This will kill the critters. Out of the freezer into the refrigerator for a day then into the humidor. If you buy cigars, and get some from outside the country, as you just have, never mix them together without doing the freezer trick.

How do I know this? This company was one of my biggest clients, they taught me. Had free cigars for many years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altadis
What new gun my dear, this old thing?

This, in any airtight container.

Quart mason jars might be tall enough for your stogies.
