His pension amount was set long before he retired, by state law. LEO & FD are high-hazard occupations that receive an increased rate of pension over and above what all other public service employees receive. Can you imagine the lawsuit costs and attorney fees involved if the County had denied him his pension based on his inaction at Parkland? The LEO union would have been all over them with litigation that would have cost the taxpayers far more than what he receives as his pension payments.

I didn't want to be the only one on this plank... I find myself often alone on these things more and more often. He didn't earn the pension that day, he earned it over 30 years. It was a part of his salary. It is unreasonable to suggest he should not be paid.

He is subject to wrongful death suits. They're going to be hard to prove, but the burden of proof in a civil case is much less than criminal: more likely than not rather than beyond a reasonable doubt. He may be held to pay victims a huge amount, and a great way to get it from an unemployed person is by garnishing his pension.

Of course he will continue to get what he worked years for. I am just pissed at his cowardliness. You have to wonder what other things could have happened during his watch over his career. Or did he just become a coward that day?
