Scope mount question for AR

Post by czharry » Fri May 29, 2015 12:58 am

On my AR, it has the tall front sight, no carry handle. I'd like the option of mounting a scope once in a while.
What type of mounts do I need to be just high enough to keep the front sights out of the scope's field of vision?

most of the time the scope will look right past the FSB ( front sight base ) , but there are risers that go from cheap UTG for around $ 15 at gun shows to expensive Larue at $ 80 that do the same thing .

In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

I'd go for the cheapie because I'm a cheap bastard. But I'm not doing anything serious with it, just using it primarily at the range.
I thought there might be mounts that were a little higher for this type of thing.

I haven't tried it yet. I'll need to take the scope off my Mini14 to test it out.

You need "high " mounts. You will still see the front post.

You don't want to go too high or you wont get proper cheek weld. Under low magnification 3x or less, you will "see" the FSB but using AR specific high rings or the risers mentioned, you should get at least your focal point above the FSB where it won't obscure your target.

Mounted a scope on the AR. Front sight is right in the line of vision.
Found these at Optics Planet (using goog search). Just under $20. Haven't looked any other place yet.

One inch high from base to center of ring.
