.22 rat shot

Post by gregMP15 » Wed May 18, 2016 6:54 am

Anyone use .22 rat shot ? This would be like small bird shot? I was thinking of using in barn for rat control.

I've used it. VERY short range. Rifling makes the shot spin and opens up the pattern. If you can find an old smooth-bore .22 (they used to make them long ago), that will shoot it better.

It still has some velocity ..I shot a coral snake last year out front and from about 6 feet away the shot bounced back and hit me in the upper chest / shoulder ....I didn't have a tshirts on and it wasn't that bad but I would wanna take a shot from that at less than 10 feet.
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

I've used it for rats out to maybe 15 feet. That was pushing it IMHO. Ten feet and under it works well in my experience.

Never used it in .22, just .45. Maybe try some cb caps

I shot a mole from 5 feet. It ran in it's hole. Next day it had crawled out and died. It must have died a miserable death, blinded, and bloodied with a ton of little holes that didn't go too deep. Felt bad for the little guy. Now I use CB caps.
