Not many. :)

.22 LR didn't even come out until about 1890 and the earlier cartridges were mostly for demonstration and target shooting. The shotgun and the venerable Kentucky Rifle fed most people in the 1800's. Move into the 20th century and the .22 started feeding more people.

That said, the guns that won the west were mostly not the ones popularized by movies and TV.

True the 22 LR round will not come into being until the 1900s really..

But the 22 round was in use in other forms back to the 1850s.. the famous Smith & Wesson no 1 pistol using the new bored through cylinders will be using the 22 short ... And there is something you never read about much in History but how many soldiers of the Civil War were packing 22s.. S&W sold lots of those to soldiers on both sides in the beginning of the war.

And to go back a step even further you have the 22 CB cap by Flobert, that will take you back to the 1840s..

The 22 is one of those wonder shells... it has had so many variations and evolutions through the years.. its kinda taken for granted.. but where would we be today without it.. It was there from the start of Modern metallic ammunition and you can still go out and buy its direct ancestor in the store today.

Not many ammunitions can claim a 150+ year run...
