I have a friend looking for a professional documented appraisal for a 1920s Luger, supposedly in mint condition.

Anybody know of anybody?

Is it for insurance, or resale purposes?

The reason I ask is that a solid 90% of the "professional" appraisals used as justification for a selling price have no basis in reality....or true market value.

For insurance purposes is another story....

I don't know anyone locally with enough Luger-specific experience anymore......I would have recommended Harry Beckwith near Gainesville....

The real person Harry Beckwith has been dead for years the shop was purchased by the same folks who own Pickets Armory....far from anything but your average pawn gun shop employees......and low ball artists [smilie=033.gif]

Real value will come by listing it on GB with a super high reserve for a 14 day auction.....start it low and see where it ends up.....real Luger collectors will show others asking the value questions that you are looking to get answered.......the highest price that someone offers will be your ballpark.

I actually have no idea why, I assumed that it was either for insurance or just personal knowledge.

My boss asked me if I knew anyone, for a friend of his.

My understanding is that it has been in the family since new or fairly new and it's a new inheritance.

Jay Hanson of Hanson & Hanson in Southport CT.
Jay's pretty knowledgeable, I know he appraised the company collection at Savage, and I'm pretty sure he wrote the Ruger section of the Blue Book of Gun Values.
He's one of the good guys.
