30 Cal Suppressor?

Post by Dave P » Tue Jun 11, 2013 8:00 am

Thinking of getting a ruger scout rifle in 308 (bolt gun with 0 rnd box magazine). Also a gemtech HVT-THD suppressor (their cheapest one).

I would custom load sub-sonic ammo, maybe even cast bullets.

And would like to try the gemtech on a M-14 also, just for fun. Maybe on the AR, also.

Does anybody see any problems with this approach?

Why can't "regular" civilians buy these? What did I miss?

I have a YHM 7.62 Phantom that I use for multiple platforms including 5.56. It's a tiny bit heavy but I believe it's rated for any caliber that will fit trough the hole. Not too expensive either.

They are sold to "regular" civilians through Croc's Gun Shop in New Mexico.

I do not know the reasoning behind the decision to follow this business model but I suspect that it's because Ron Smith always puts his focus on serving the .mil community first, and doesn't want to be hassled with civilian transfers. Their production has likely recently caught up with .mil demand, so they let Croc's handle civilian sales via their GB "buy it now" sales.

I am looking at the Gemtech HVT-THD for $775 (retail).

BTW, rifle shot plinker 308 just fine (a few split necks - must old brass?), and also a reduced velocity lead bullet load (gotta figure out what it was!).

Just did 20 odd yards offhand - 2 inch groups without trying. It aint a target rifle, I do believe!

Yep I know the SEI Windtalker is pricey, but it quick-connects to their Vortex flash suppressors, which I have riding on four different rifles.

But I agree - the GemTech looks like a great deal - and I'm jealous of your GS Scout! :ber

I think I saw your post on m14forum on your subsonic loads. I was intrigued, and although I don't reload yet, I would be interested in seeing what works for you. Anyway, I just ordered an AAC Cyclone for use on my M1A's, Savage 10 (cut and threaded to 18") and my 300 blk rifles. With shipping to my FFL, the Cyclone was $625!

My AAC TiRant 45 absolutely rocks, so I am anxious to see the performance of the Cyclone.

I have the HVT-QD and run it on my M1A,a vz-58,a savage hog hunter and a Keltec RFB.Get the QD version its worth every penny.I saw a accuracy improvement in most of my rifles except the hog hunter.I haven't shot any subsonic rounds as I don't reload yet.If you want to try out any of these PM me.(Bring your own ammo tho.) I shoot at the antelope club most Sundays.
