I have had several. Autos to pumps. I most prefer the Mossberg 590 Mariner. One model holds 9 rounds total. I prefer it over
the 870 Remmy Mariner due to the placement of the safety and the slide release. Much more user-friendly, IMHO.
I upgraded mine with a metal trigger group and replaced the plastic safety with a metal unit, too. Nice behind the door gun with 9
rounds of 00 buck. That's some good firepower. "Hello.........who's there?" [smilie=011.gif]

Get a pump. Cheaper, more reliable and plenty fast firing enough for anyone. For your use a modestly used one from a major maker like Remington, Mossberg, Winchester, etc would be fine and save you a bundle. Just don't get an old beater unless you want to learn gunsmithing.

If you get lucky you may find a Saiga 12, may have to add another $100 or 200 to you budget. For home defense have you considered Taurus Judge at all ?

Pretty hard to beat a Mossberg, even the plain ole' 500.
Five in the tube plus one ain't bad, either.
Walmart sells them for what, around $250 or so?
If you had to use it for home defense, the police will take it, so why spend any more?
A basic shotgun with training and practice, trumps a fancy one without any day.

I own the Ithaca M37 Defense. Been around for a long time and very reliable.
I was part of the SOLUTION, were YOU?

Mossberg 930SPX would be my choice. Semi-auto and good capacity. Works best with high brass shells. But since your purpose is home defense, it won't be hard to find #4 buckshot in high brass.

I've sold all my scatter guns but miss the basic Mossy I had with a 12" LOP stock. Simple and quick for home defense.

My first choice is an old Sears/High Standard pump action 12 gauge. It will pump fire like the Model 12 and the 37 and the action is slicker than greased eagle s';t! I also have a Model 12 and a 500. More then one time just racking one into the chamber has convinced someone they did not want to continue with what they were doing. [-X

In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

Thank you guys for your responses.
