How far can a 12g target load travel ?

Post by HammerinHank » Wed Sep 05, 2012 9:34 pm

I have a piece of Property to shoot clays on. With a Mod. Or full choke tube, was wondering how far a 12 gauge target load could travel ? I can shoot across a Pond and there's about 300 yards easy before it hits the bank. And I can shoot a better angle a top some trees and there's about 300 to 400 yards to a house.

At the angle for arial shots, a long way.
Depending more on the ammo than the choke.
The choke determines the spread; the ammo and angle determine the distance the pellets travel.
To find out exactly, use one of the online ballistic programs.

My experience at Port Malabar: we shoot 200 yard highpower downrange from the skeet/trap boys. When the wind is behind them, we get pelted (a little bit) . this is about 750 feet away - (250 yards) for number 7 or 8 shot.

Yes, we are behind a small berm...

At our gun colub up here the shot takes the lower leaves off the trees at 225 yds, so its still got some umph and elevation at that point, but if you keeps your shots low, maybe 150 yds
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

300 yards should be enough for your standard target loads of 7.5, 8, 8.5, or 9. Even at a 45 degree angle that should be fine. Now if you get to shooting bird loads with #6 or larger, you'll need more room

7.5 & 8 size shot typically travels about 200 yds on a trap range (my empirical experience as that's where the bulk of the shot was retrieved for reuse). I have a graphic copied from the FL Hunter Ed material showing the range of #9's out to about 750', #7 1/2's out to about 800', #6's to 900', #4's out to 1000' and #2 out to 1100'... I don't know if that graphic is available on the Web or not... I also have a book around here somewhere with the guidelines for building a range and IIRC a skeet range had to be clear out to about 500 yds (our club property was 660' long and it was about 1/2 the distance we needed to build a shotgun range for the members.)

Where we once lived, there were hunting fields and woods well over two city blocks away.
During season, there was a fairly regular rain of pellets on our roof and yard.
They were well dispersed, and did no harm, but they kept us indoors during the day.
Fortunately, it was a short season.

all I can say is about 10 years ago I was rounding up investors for an indoor trap field in an old warehouse, the engineer said we would still need a bullet trap at 250 feet, the shredded rubber and or ballistic curtain was a no go...... that 50 foot high bullet trap kinda killed the idea [-(

wearing hearing protection .... [smilie=011.gif]

j/k it was an old furniture warehouse in an industrial park, lots of other noise outside louder than a shotgun going off indoors

the backstop was just the tip of the ice berg, we thought we could get away with ducting in fresh air and not having to HEPA filter the exhaust, come on when you shoot outside there is no filter :ham'r ....freakin EPA B.S.

What?
Skyway in Pinellas Co. stopped using lead shot for steel or the clubs loads. Would that be needing HEPA exhaust filters?

300 yards would be a safe distance with target loads, I wouldn't think twice about it. Have fun! _:
