We chose 20 gauge over 16 for the missus strictly for the availability issue. That and 12 shakes her up some.

I've found 16 gauge at Bass Pro and Gander Mountain, also some odds and ends at gun stores that had old stock. Its a damn near extinct shotgun round but the ammo's out there and they're still making it, just very limited compared to 12/20/.410

it's not impossible to find, but you're not likely to get it at WallyMart either. A lot of the hunting type shops will have some (like he mentioned at BP and Gander). It's still made, but in limited quantities so most any gun shop that cares to can always order it for you, or you can get from Midway, etc. I know that when I built my little double 16 shorty I started snarfing up as much ammo as I could lay my hands on, just in case. I've got plenty enough now that I don't feel like I need to snatch it up unless it's a really good deal, but then again I got given another double 16 recently by my Step-Dad, so maybe I should. :-k

I had never owned or shot one before my shorty, but after a good bit of experience with it, I have to say I really like the caliber. It definitely packs a little more punch than a 20, but is nowhere near as brutal as a 12 in such a light weight gun. If the price is right and you like the gun, I'd say get it. You can always find a way to feed it, even if you eventually have to resort to rolling your own, a Lee shotshell reloader is only like 100 bucks.

Shop the shows... The last Lakeland show I was at, an old guy had a SxS he was trying to get rid of for $250. I mentioned ammo availability, and he told me he'd toss in 5 CASES of mixed ammo. It sure sucks to be broke. That's when I find the deals. ](*,)

Amen, brother. There is a gun at a good price I want to buy but we are the "skipping paychecks" mode again at owrk. Meanwhile our A/R is higher than ever.

I just hate going into debt for any non-emergency. Been there, done that. Never again.

Even a mass retailer like Sportsman Guide has plenty online (I am sure Midway has much more, although they charge more).

IMHO the 16 is a near perfect guage. You can shoot all day without it bothering you and it throws a load nearly as big as a 2 3/4 in. 12. I find the kick of a high pressure 20 more annoying than the push of the lower pressure 16.

But ammo is no longer available in the economy specials like 12 and 20.

+1 for what Tector said> Sportsmans Guide
They carry cheap promotional dove loads in 16 that are good for clays or skeet and buckshot and slugs too. If you google you will find coupons that will in effect save you the shipping cost ... and since you also save on sales tax, it ends up that you can get discounted 16 gauge ammo after all.
I was raised on 16 gauge ... and now all those guns are mine.

I've got 4 16ga shotguns right now. When kmart was closing, they were selling 12, 16, and 20ga shells for $.50 a box of 25. I've got at least 100 boxes of each left. The walmart on griffin and flamingo in south fl has it in stock usually.

16ga is the ultimate shotgun in my opinion. As soon as i find a deal on a reloader, I'll roll some more buckshot.

I'll double your price on all that ammo, cash money right now. =:e [smilie=011.gif]

I got a lee loader for Christmas last year to do the same but still haven't had the time to mess with it. One of these days.....
