New load for my M14 using IMR 4064

Post by GunnyHiway » Sun Mar 12, 2017 7:05 pm

After years of using IMR 4895 powder in all my M14s and M1 Garands I did some researching on this forum and went out to "experiment" with IMR 4064 which I have quite a bit. I needed a change as it seemed I was not getting the results I require out of my "newer" rifles.

I tried 6 different loads starting at 39 grains thru 43.3 as advised thru different posts.
During my experiments I then discovered that 40.5 grains of 4064 in an LC case, CCI primer pushing a SMK 168 HPBT gave me very good results. I have a standard SA with a 1961 SA chromelined barrel and all other parts are SA USGI.
I do not have a chrony but the load did not to have any adverse effects as far as excessive recoil, FTF or FTEs and the brass piled at between 1 and 2 O'clock

The following are targets with 10 rounds shot at 100 yards off a bag using iron sights.

On both I had two breathing mistakes and two finger placement mistakes and one pre-recoil jerk at 7 o'clock which is very uncommon with me.

Overall I am very satisfied with the results as I have not setup a real practice schedule in many years and have only shot my rifle a few times in the last 4 months or so and that was only for load development. I know from experience that these groups WILL improve greatly with trigger time as the weak link is ME from lazyness of known rifle discipline and not keeping a regular practice schedule.
I plan on shooting the remainder of matches at our club this year with a high degree of success.

The club range is a backstop of bunker concrete filled with sand used during WWII at the Montbrook Army Air Field to dial in nose and wing guns on B-25s. The tie downs are still in the concrete at different distances, lots of history here.

Good shooting and good info.

I have not reloaded in many years but may need to set it up again. I had good results in 30-06 Garand and several other calibers (5.56, 30 carb, 30-30, 7.62 Nato, 458 WM) with 3031

5.56 and 30 carb were not worth the time it took to load one at a time. _:

Thanks for the compliments guys. [smilie=cheers1.gif]

I changed out my hooded NM rear sight with a non-hooded NM one from AmmoGarand.com. I like the look of it better than the other one and it works just as well for me.

I only had 4 match rounds left from the week I started testing loads before I do my ammo reloading workday so I went out to the club range on April 8th to get the rear sights dialed in for Mays iron sight match.

With the new sight the first shot was high and a bit left so I went down 2 clicks and over one, I was more aware of my trigger technique and breathing as I have had some issues from not shooting matches for a few years so I sat at the bench for a few minutes looking at the treeline then went to work.

40.2 grains of 4064 in an LC case trimmed to spec, CCI primer pushing a Sierra MK 168 grain HPBT. 100 yards off a bag. I am well pleased with the results, better than the first targets I posted. I know 4 rounds are not the greatest example of consistancy in any load but I am convinced this is the sweet spot of the load/barrel combination of this rifle.

I'm looking forward to getting my eyes examined next week and update my vision ability, it's been about 4 years since I had a new pair of specs.

The only bitch I have with my rifle is I need to rough up the pistol grip area as it's a bit slick. Other than that she's a real doll not only in her simplistic issue looks but how well she performs in my hands. =D>

Very nice to see someone getting the best out of their M1A!
Congratulations, fine group and load development.

Again - great group!

If your wood stock is too slipperry, try some carnuba floor paste on it - even if you polish it to a gloss, it is still stickery. (so you don't fall on your ass on a freshly polished wood floor!)

Thank you ! Of all the weapons I have owned in my 61 years my M14s are by far the most enjoyable to shoot, reload for and just own for that matter. My pleasure comes from trying to achieve a perfect score. I have never done it in standard 3 position matches. I chased that for many years so now I chase perfection at 100 yards, open sights off a sandbag. Lots of fun with zero stress !

Thanks Dave.
I use Johnsons wood floor paste wax on my wood stocked GI rifles and also on my custom flintlock long rifles I have built.
I'll look into some carnuba as I was told it is illegal to rough up the grip area when in an NRA HP match, not that I see myself shooting in one anytime soon.

Johnsons wood floor paste wax

I bet that is as good as any.

Maybe someday we need to get together again - all my rifles and reloading gear have not been used for a long time. Need to unload someday.

I'm not sure if Rodman has left yet so maybe all of us could have a shoot. Your range or mine ? LOL ! [smilie=011.gif]
