Which FAL to get?
Please recommend a FAL build for me. I want a 16" or 18" barrel.
I found those two:
http://www.dsarms.com/SA58-FALTactical- ... o/SA58TAC/
and
http://www.dsarms.com/SA58-FAL-Carbine- ... o/SA58C18/
Are there other's that I don't know about? Cheaper? Which one would you get?

Re: Which FAL to get?
The FAL was used in over 90 countries of the world. There are many variants available. While DSA makes great receivers, they have run out of foreign made surplus parts. Their guns from a few years ago were great, but their newer guns now use US bolts & carriers, & that's a problem. Try to find a FAL that was built by a reputable person from a #'s matching kit on a DSA or Imbel receiver. Go to the FAL files & learn all about the different FAL's that are available. On that site there are many nice Imbel guns built on Imbel kits for $800. GARY N4KVE

Re: Which FAL to get?
I have had built Imbel FALs with Steyr parts, a DSA STG-58, and currently have a DSA SA-58 carbine. I prefer the shorter barrel lightweight FALs.

Re: Which FAL to get?
I have already seen 2 recent DSA built guns have to go back to DSA with busted [American made] bolts. So I would call to find out the origin of the bolt used in the gun in question. DSA knows there is a problem with the heat treating of their US made bolts. But they wont replace them until after they break. Check out the for sale section at the "FAL FILES" forum. GARY N4KVE

Re: Which FAL to get?
The other option is to look for the older (built) FAL by DSA w/ original parts and barrel, like the Austrian STG58(A) and DSA made type 1 or 2 receiver.

Re: Which FAL to get?
Personally I'd take a 18" barrel over a 16" one. The ballistic arc of 7.62x51 starts looking a lot like 7.62x39 out of a 16" barrel.

Re: Which FAL to get?
Imbel parts are good, but then you still need a receiver, and a good FAL builder to put it all together. Some builders have been crap, some have been great. I loved my DSA built STG-58, and I had an Imbel parts rifle that shot well but looked somewhat ratty.
Very happy with my current all DSA carbine.

Re: Which FAL to get?
I wouldn't buy a "new" fal from anyone these days. Look for an old Century with an Imbel receiver, or an old DSA with foreign parts. I've built 5, 2 on century receivers, one on a dsa, and 2 on Imbels. Back in the day of $150 primo parts kits and $180 century receivers.
Look for a good used one, and customize.
