Backpack camping and hiking in central fl

Post by Srasel79 » Tue Jul 07, 2015 12:31 pm

I wanted to see if any of you guys have any favorite spots to backpack in And camp for a night or two. My friends and I hiked along the Florida trail and camped in the little big econ State Forest. We are kind of looking for something near the water and away from most other people. Would like to keep it in the Central Florida area. looking for maybe a three to five mile hike only as We are carrying 50 pounds of gear on our backs.

Ocala Natl Forest...bring you Meth Zombie repellent spray
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

You are brave to hike in the heat!

OCNF: should be able to find a path along Alexander Springs, as it runs to Lake George. Or Salt Springs area. Or what is that other big spring along FL40 (Juniper Springs).

This time of year Ocala can be brutal, a few miles out of Juniper on the north loop you leave the treeline and are stuck in this scrub hammock for miles. No shade and oppressive heat interspersed with deluge rain, not fun. Its nearly impossible to carry enough water hiking here in the summer and the groundwater up there is jacked up, even with a filter there is fertilizer runoff in a lot of it.

Wait until fall, much more pleasant. Also try Goethe, its a state forest in Dunnellon and its nice.

Lake Kissimmee State Park has a nice loop section of the Florida Trail, but not much in the way of water access though. The section that runs upstream from Suwanee Springs along the Suwanee River has nice bluffs and huge sandbar swimming spots.

I like the Florida trail trailhead off Juniper Springs heading north. I usually primitive camp off a small creek there, about 3 hours in.
