What Powder 223 & 30/06

Postby JJ » Thu Feb 04, 2010 9:42 pm

Just a quickie question... Im loading for rem 223 and 30.06 springfield...
Want to try to keep only 1 powder for starters.... What's the better choice?
Hodgdon's 4895 or H335

Both are fine for 223 but H335 meters better and 4895 should not be used in a progressive particularly in 223.

4895 is better for 3006 than H335 as 335 should not be used for anything more than 125-130gr bullets (I would use it for 150gr and adjust the load from lower bullets weights but I can not recommend what is not in the book to you)

Remember, 4895 was actually invented for the Garrand because 4831 was bending the rods being to slow burning.

4895 can be used in all bullet weights in both 3006 and 223.

If you can find Varget than it's one powder for just about all . I use it for 223, 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R, and 303 British

Well, was unable to get any H335. But did see some Hodgdon BL-C2.
Has anyone played with this powder in the 223 or 30/06?
would be using a 55 gr in the 223 and a 147gr. in the 06.

There is almost no caliber 4985 can be used for. I have not seen any advantage to Varget and have in my shooting, found 4895 both more versatile and more accurate. That does not mean you will have the same results, however (as others have stated)

BL-C-2 is a powder NATO often uses for 308.
It is OK for 223 but not my first choice not even my sixth choice.
4895 will give you 5% more velocity with 5% less powder.

BL-C-2 is also not a good 3006 powder.
For the 147-152gr bullet the best powders are H380 W760, H4350 but in a Garrand 4895 would be the best bet

Varget and 4895 are very similar as far as what calibers they can be used for, however the first is considered more consistent in varying temperatures.

Thought I'd fix that for ya....

Personally, I like BL-C(2) for .223. I have tried Varget and did not have as good a result behind 55gr bulk FMJs. I haven't given up on Varget, but it isn't high on my list right now.

I just cracked into my last of four 8lb jugs of 2230-C for .223 rounds. It's the non-canister equivalent. Seems to work fine for me. Meters well.
I'll probably go to commercial 2230 when I run out of that unless I find another surplus powder that I like.

I've used both Varget and 4895 for .308 and done fine with either.

Well, it will be just one more thing I can try.. has got to be better then the 2400 I've been using in the 223.
I keep getting 2 holes in a 5 shot group, instead of only one hole. sometimes 4 in one hole then a flyer, or 3 in one hole and 2 in another hole half inch away.

Interesting, My 55 grain loads with Varget sucked as well. It really shines with 68 or 69 grain but that may be due to the rifle preferring heavier projectiles.

I had just begun testing AA2230 when Trail Glades went down for renovations. The results were looking really good. I was using a Hornady 52gr HPBT on a recommendation from an out of state friend in a 1:9 twist. I suppose I'll get back to shooting the AR in the next few weeks or so and will resume the testing.

my 1 in 9 shooting sucked @ 55 grain . Than I tried some 62's and got way better. Now using 69 SMK and 68 Hornady match with under MOA results. When I get low on those I'm going to try some 75 grain Hornady V-max. I've heard from people with Savage 1 in 9 that heavier bullets shoot better. Others like the lighter ones.
